The universal nature of music, which spans every cultural boundary, can elicit reactions even from newborn infants. Just as nearly everyone learns to speak one or more languages as a vital means of communication, most acquire distinct musical “languages” — or at least certain tastes and preferences linked to their cultures and their generational experience. Apart from my love of science, music serves as my primary creative outlet. And while I listen to and relate to nearly all forms of music, I specialize in certain kinds of musical expression.
About My Music
Professionally known as “The Dr. J. Experience,” I am a singer-songwriter who mainly plays guitar and piano to write music that deals with the core themes of life, love, relationships, and our place in the cosmos. My musical genre can best be described as a combination of soft and folk rock, with a special focus on lyrical content and poetic expression. My compositions have been inspired first and foremost by many of the folk, pop, and rock artists of my youth, such as The Beatles (natch!), The Beach Boys, David Bowie, Bread, Carpenters, Chicago, Credence Clearwater Revival, Crosby/Stills/Nash, Bob Dylan, Eagles, Fifth Dimension, Fleetwood Mac, Aretha Franklin, Marvin Gaye, Billy Joel, Elton John, Carole King, The Mamas & the Papas, Bob Marley, Don McLean, Joni Mitchell, Pink Floyd, John Prine, Linda Ronstadt, Simon and Garfunkel, Carly Simon, Sly and the Family Stone, Steely Dan, The Spinners, James Taylor, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder, and Neil Young. Of course, I listened to a great many other artists and genres as well, but I would be remiss if I did not highlight Dan Fogelberg as the single most important influence on my own musical stylings.
The Dr. J. Experience
The Dr. J. Experience offers a vehicle to share my original compositions rooted in lifelong observations and reflections about the human condition. The blending of words and music affords a unique means of expressing oneself differently than what can be accomplished through words alone. The opportunity to work with my music producer and multi-instrumentalist Caleb Michalski (a.k.a., CxViolet) has led to some rather unique imaginings of the songs I’ve written, bringing them to life in ways I could not have imagined in my younger years. The most important outcome has been the release of the debut albums, titled “62 Since ‘62” and available for purchase in the merch section of the website. Finally, “The Dr. J. Experience” YouTube channel offers not only music videos for several of my tunes, but includes inspirational commentaries, reaction videos, and occasional interviews with artists regarding the state of contemporary music.
